A bobsled accident involving an employee of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games occurred Thursday when a speeding bobsled slammed into the track worker near the finish line at the Sanki Sliding Center, CBS News reported on Feb. 13. The bobsled accident left the worker with two fractured legs and a concussion, said the president of the IOC, Thomas Bach.

In a statement regarding the bobsled accident, IOC President Thomas Bach told The Associated Press..."We still do not know why he was in this zone and exactly what happened. The information we have so far is that he has a broken leg and maybe a concussion. We are following up on this matter."

"According to standard procedure, a warning signal was given ahead of the forerunners' bob beginning its run on the track," Sochi organizers stated shortly after the accident.

International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams spoke on the bobsled accident and he told AP that the employee is... "conscious, talking and suffered fractures in both legs."

Officials expressed that a bobsled accident such as the one that took place Thursday is rare and they have taken extra precautions following the accident that killed Georgian competitor Nodar Kumaritashvili on the eve of the Games in Vancouver 2010.

The bobsled accident occurred before the start of training session when the empty sled went down the tube and hit a worker who allegedly was part of a team that was repairing a light near the goal line. Photos of the bobsled accident show the person being treated on the same track before an ambulance arrived. The bobsled accident delayed further training but as of the time of this report, the situation has been resolved.

More details on the bobsled accident are forthcoming and updates will be posted here as they are made available.
