Bobbi Kristina: #fastmetabolism or eating disorder?

It's in her DNA, people!

That's what Bobbi Kristina Brown contends as she continues to defend her slim frame on social media. Brown was criticized for being too skinny, but credits her genes — and Whitney Houston — for her figure.

“I am my mothers child! Have you ever heard of a #fastmetabolism ?” Brown wrote on Twitter Tuesday. “Lol, it’s incredible how the world will judge you 4ANY&EVERYthing”

The judgements exploded on social media earlier this week after the 21-year-old shared a photo of herself wearing a teeny black bikini.

Her husband Nick Gordon quickly joined the Twitter chatter, tweeting on Tuesday, “My baby is perfect the way she is," and "Working out Eating right and loving life is how my women (sic) keeps her body nobody cares that you are concerned what important is she is comfy."

Brown and Gordon grew up together in the Houston home since Gordon was 12. They started dating shortly after Houston died just over two years ago. In January, Brown announced, again via Twitter, that the couple tied the knot.

As is evident in this particular controversy, American society remains obsessed with weight. Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, are a huge problem according to the National Institute of Mental Health, and can be life-threatening. Characteristics of anorexia include:

  • Extreme thinness
  • A relentless pursuit of thinness
  • Intense fear of gaining weight
  • Distorted body image

According to NIMH, eating disorders are real, treatable medical illnesses. They frequently coexist with other illnesses, such as:

  • depression
  • substance abuse
  • or anxiety disorders

This particular case may appear to be a matter of public opinion, but it's really for Brown and her personal physician to determine whether or not she suffers from an eating disorder or simply has, as she claims, a fast metabolism. But if you or someone you love may suffer from an eating disorder, contact your doctor or visit the National Eating Disorders Association website.
