For nearly 50 years, Bob Weir has been keeping fans happy and dancing in the aisles with his distinctive rhythm guitar sounds. His influences cover a wide array of musical styles. Artists like pianist McCoy Tyner, the great bluesman John Coltrane and the classical legend Igor Stravinsky, to name a few. Weir’s never-ending and eclectic love of music has allowed him to continue to bring an unusual depth and an ever-evolving approach to the role of rhythm guitar over the years.
At just 17, Weir became the co-founder, guitarist and vocalist of the improvisational jam band Grateful Dead whose 30-year career defined an era. With throngs of hard-core fans, many caravanning from city-to-city to jam and dance with the band, The Dead's legacy remains a cultural phenomenon even today. Weir-penned Grateful Dead classics like “Truckin’,” “Sugar Magnolia” and “Cassidy,” are among the band’s most legendary jams.
Weir also found success apart from the group, releasing his first solo album Ace in 1972 and playing in a number of other bands such as Kingfish, Bob Weir Band, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, RatDog and Furthur (with former Grateful Dead bandmate Phil Lesh).
In 1994, Weir and his Grateful Dead band mates were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2007 they were honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Not too bad for a bunch of hippies...(wink).
An extra special treat for fans is having Weir’s band RatDog with him at this Phoenix show. RatDog is made up of members Jeff Chimenti, Steve Kimock, Jay Lane, Robin Sylvester and Rob Wasserman.
Two things I know for sure...with any Bob Weir show, you will never hear the same thing twice and no matter what, you will have an amazing time.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
