Bob Newhart to guest star on 'The Big Bang Theory' after 10 year break from TV

Bob Newhart will make a guest appearance on the CBS hit comedy “The Big Bang Theory” as Professor Proton, the former host of Dr. Sheldon Cooper’s favorite childhood science show.

TVLine exclusively reported on March 21 that six-time Emmy nominated Newhart will return for his first half-hour comedy sitcom appearance in nearly 10 years

A comedy legend, Bob Newhart celebrated 50 years show business in 2010 and headlined two successful television comedies. In “The Bob Newhart Show” which aired in the 1970s he portrayed Robert Hartley, Ph.D., and co-starred Suzanne Pleshette as his wife. In the 1980s Newhart portrayed author and inn-keeper Dick Loudon on "Newhart" which co-starred Mary Frann as his wife.

TVLine reports that a source on the set of “The Big Bang Theory” says that in the storyline Sheldon tracks down his idol online and discovers that Professor Proton can be hired for parties and events. Of course, Dr. Sheldon Cooper, portrayed by Emmy winner Jim Parsons, books Professor Proton to come to the apartment he shares with Dr. Leonard Hofstadter.

Viewers will find out that Professor Proton was a key player in the childhoods of both Sheldon and Leonard. The episode of “The Big Bang Theory” guest starring Bob Newhart as Professor Proton will air on May 2.
