Bob Dylan to team up with Paul McCartney?

  Paul McCartney (Chris Pizzello/AP)

We haven't seen Rolling Stone 1078 (the one with Bob Dylan on the cover), but reports say he suggests that he'd like to work with Paul McCartney.

Credit Ed Masley of the Arizona Republic for noticing this first. (NME.com has also picked up on it.) His story on it appeared a couple of days ago.  "That'd be exciting to do something with Paul! But, ya know, your paths have to cross for something like that to make sense," Masley quoted Dylan.

Given the fact that Dylan just toured Mendips while in Liverpool (see our exclusive reports here and here), it seems he more than a casual interest in the Beatles. (We've heard that he also stopped by Forthlin Road but was unable to tour it. An official source said it was a time problem, but someone who took the tour over the weekend said it was because no one answered the door when he arrived.)

If you think about it, it'd be a strange collaboration. How would Dylan's song styles mesh with McCartney's?

On the other hand, one of McCartney's best collaborations post-John Lennon came with someone -- Elvis Costello -- whose song stylings didn't seem a great fit.

Great artists make things work. Let's hope these guys get the chance.

I think McCartney could make it work he seems the more adaptable of the two. I hope they do something together--it would be legendary.

Why not have Paul join the Wilburys!!!

I think George once said that Paul couldn't be a Wilbury....and personally, I would not want that. Paul is of a completely different mind set.

IMO, I don't see a Dylan McCartney collaboration working, but that's just me. For sure Dylan would be a straight shooter and take no BS from Paul.

I think this is mutual because somewhere I read or heard Paul would also like to work with Dylan. I don't have a link to anything, but I remember something like that.

You'd have to have Dhani Harrison in the Wilburys lineup too, he could sing George's parts. How wild and weird would that be?
Can you imagine just a one-off concert somewhere???

Dylan's new album is fantastic! I see no reason why the two should not collaborate...would be interesting.

I am very much in favour of a colaboration. In fact, I would wish them to form a new group consisting of Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr. None can replace Harrison and Lennon, yet if one goes through the past, Clapton and Dylan may be the right collaborators. This will not be the new-Beatles, but a new group of musicians who are contemporary, and whose combinations seem to be the best possible musical happening possible in today's world. And as a wise gesture, this new group should take up the newly found lyrics of Harrison and 'Now and Then' of Lennon to render their own interpretations. It seems a dream, but it seems a possible dream. Don't you all agree?
