Bob Coy, megachurch pastor, resigned Sunday from his post at the Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, issuing a statement that indicated he had confessed to some sort of sin and ethical failure that was serious enough to warrant dismissal.

The Christian Post reported today that in a “stunning revelation Sunday, senior officials… announced that their popular founding pastor Bob Coy, 58, has resigned after “confessing to a moral failing.’”

A statement issued on the Calvary Chapel website read, in part:

On April 3, 2014, Bob Coy resigned as Senior Pastor of Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, effective immediately, after confessing to a moral failing in his life which disqualifies him from continuing his leadership role at the church he has led since its founding in 1985. The media ministry of the Active Word that distributes his Bible teachings through radio, television, and digital media has also been suspended.

Church officials said that regular services will still be provided but that Coy will now be “focusing his full attention on his personal relationship with God and with his family.” The statement indicated that “counselors and ministers” will now assist Coy and “guide him through the process of full repentance, cleansing and restoration.”

Founded in 1985, Coy presided over one of the largest and fastest growing churches in the United States; over 20,000 weekly members visit the church and its satellite locations throughout Florida. Coy has been forthright about his previous life as a former Las Vegas music executive and a former “reviewer” of nude girls at a Vegas Casino.

Many responded to the news of Coy’s resignation on Calvary's Facebook page with messages of hope and forgiveness.

Although the megachurch has not commented on what Coy’s "failings" were, Phoenix preacher Michael Newnham wrote in his blog that they have confirmation Coy cheated on his wife, Diane Coy, admitting to at least two affairs in the past year alone, and that Coy has a long standing problem with pornography.
