Bob Costas replaced on NBC Olympics; host resting in dark room, taking medicine

Bob Costas wasn’t on NBC and Olympic fans missed him on Tuesday. The announcement came on Tuesday morning during the Today show that Matt Lauer would replace Bob Costas, but it wasn't until the evening Olympic prime time coverage that the decision was seen by the viewers. According to For the Win on Tuesday it ends a two-decade run by Bob Costas that spanned 157 consecutive Olympic prime time broadcasts.

Apparently the decision is because the sports journalist’s eyes have become worse and he is having a considerable amount of trouble. According to the New York Times the host is resting in a dark room and taking antibiotics hoping to be ready for Wednesday night. The infection started in his left eye and spread to his right eye. And now it seems he his medical issues need to come first.

Bob Costas taking the day off from Olympic coverage is almost unbelievable. The star of NBC’s prime time has become a big fixture in sharing the Olympics with America. While Matt Lauer is capable of sharing the news of the Sochi Olympics with America, it just won’t be the same until Costas returns.

While Matt Lauer showcased the highlights from the Olympics just fine, he’s got to be tired with the double duty as he is working the Today show too. After Sochi it’s safe to say Lauer might need a vacation!
