Boasting while you are going through, at the brink and in the midst

1 I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together! Psalm 34:1-3

24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:24

David is such a strong example of how we are to respond when we are going through. In the above psalm, David is intent on blessing the Lord and giving Him honor, even though his purpose is being pursued and his future is uncertain. Had not he been appointed to be king in his youth? Had he not been anointed by God for such a time as this? Yet, he was on the run, a fugitive, looking for refuge as King Saul determined to take his life (1 Sam. 20:31). He was afraid, running from cave to cave, not really understanding how God would deliver him. Yet, even though he was going through, even though it seemed he was at the brink of destruction, even though he was in the midst of a life crisis and his actions seemed short on faith, David blessed the Lord!

Many of us are going through our own storms. It has been said that there are three types of people in the world – those who are in a storm, those who are heading toward a storm, and those who just came out of a storm. Storms are everywhere! There are financial storms, relationship storms, employment storms, physical storms, and ministry storms. It seems that everyone is either going through, at the brink of going through in the midst of going through and, thank God for those who are (temporarily, of course) at the end of going through! But there is a valuable lesson to be learned from David that can’t be overlooked. David had a posture of praise! Even in our distresses, there is reason to praise the Lord!

I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall continually be in my mouth – David understood that praise moves God, that praise is what pleases God. It shows God that we are dependent only on Him, that regardless of what we are experiencing, He has the first and last say so! Yes, there are times when we are fearful, there are times when our faith is short, but even in those fleshly moments, we must yield to God’s Spirit, knowing that He is, indeed, the author and finisher of our faith. We must turn it over to Him and allow Him to be God! It is who He is, it is what He does! The proper response should always be PRAISE!

David was in the midst of a scary situation, but his soul boasted in the Lord! He understood

Jeremiah 9:24 – “but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” God said that the only thing we could possibly boast about was understanding Him, knowing Him, and knowing these things about Him: He practices steadfast love, justice and righteousness in the earth!

I don’t know about you but I get great comfort from these verses. Despite what you are going through, what you are at the brink of, or even in the midst of, set your desire to praise Him and boast of Him because you understand Him (more and more each day) – You know that He has ordered your steps, He won’t withhold any good thing from you, and all things are continually working out for your good and His glory! You can rest in the fact that you know Him – He is your Savior, He is your shield and buckler, He is your deliverance, He is the keeper of your soul! Whether you are feeling discomfort because of others who are despitefully using you, hating on you or mistreating you, you know that God practices steadfast love, justice and righteousness!

I say to you, lift up your head, be encouraged, walk in the liberty wherein Christ has set you free! Magnify the Lord, exalt His name! Praise Him – Brag on Him! Boast on Him – despite what you are going through, at the brink of, or in the midst of!
