"Boast In The Lord!"(1 Corinthians 1:31)

February is Black History Month.  There are several churches and community organizations planning events to commemorate the history of African Americans.  The Parks and Recreation Department of Columbia, TN is planning two such events.  One event entitled “In Motion” of interpretive dance and music will be held at the Macedonia Center on Thursday, February 9, 6-7:30 pm.  The Fairview Recreation Center will host its annual Black History Music Festival entitled “Embracing Black History Through Music” on Monday, February 20, 6-7:30 pm.  Area churches, dancers, choirs, poets, musicians, etc. are invited to come and be apart.  The contact is Charlene Secrest.  (Please view the websites below for more on Columbia Parks and Recreation events.)

What is the focus of celebrating history more specifically Black History?  The focus is the God of his-story.  God has created and worked through individuals, communities, etc. from the beginning of time.  God is the beginning and the ending.  It is significant to reflect on history and what has been accomplished.  God chooses those who are despised by the world and who are considered foolish to confuse the wise. (1 Corinthians 1:27)  “For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” (1 Corinthians 1:25)

God’s wisdom is above the reproach of men.  He chose His Son, Jesus, to be a Jew.  He can choose whomever from any race, background, etc and use him or her for His glory.  God has a legacy of taking imperfect humans such as Abraham, Sarah, Rahab, Ruth, and King David and using them for His glory.  So the point of celebrating history is to celebrate how God’s is awesome and wonderful in His creation.  It is not to boast or be overly proud about the good accomplishments of history, but it is to be thankful to the Lord.  “Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”(1 Corinthians 1:31)
