Board president calls for surprise executive session about Supt. Stevenson

Jeffco School Board President Ken Witt told board members he wanted to add an executive session “to discuss matters around Dr. Stevenson and a possible action plan” to Saturday’s scheduled study session on the 2014-15 budget.

Superintendent Cindy Stevenson told the board that her lawyer would not be available to attend on Saturday. Board policy states that any Jeffco Schools employee may have a lawyer present when personnel matters are discussed in executive session.

Board member Lesley Dahlkemper said she would not vote to approve a move to executive session without Stevenson’s lawyer present, and urged Witt to find a date that would work for all parties.

Witt quickly volunteered to meet on Friday, Feb. 7 instead.

“I don’t know what the executive session is about,” Dahlkemper said. “You’d have to tell me what the sense of urgency is.”

Witt did not elaborate about the reason for the executive session.

“We’ll add the agenda item and vote on it appropriately,” Witt said.

The Denver Post reported that Brad Miller, the school board attorney hired in a surprise move in December, said the meeting is not about firing the superintendent, but no further information about the meeting was provided.

Stevenson submitted a resignation letter in November and gave June 30 as her last day. She has worked for Jeffco Schools for forty years. This week, Stevenson announced that she accepted a position to direct the Colorado Association of School Executives' new leadership initiative after finishing her contract with Jeffco Schools.

Four votes are required for the Jeffco School Board to meet in executive session. If the move to executive session is not approved, the issue will be discussed in public.

The board will meet for the study session at 8 am this Saturday in the 4th floor conference room of the Jeffco Schools Education Center, 1829 Denver West Dr, Building 27, in Golden. The agenda lists the budget discussion first, with a vote to move to executive session estimated to take place at 11 am.
