This is by far the closest call I have ever seen. While drifting through a vacant parking garage, the BMW drifter miscalculated his trajectory and nearly took out a support pillar. The vehicles stopped within an inch of hitting the pillar! This is an incredibly lucky incident caught on tape. If there was one variable changed such as tire friction, suspension flex, brake grip, or even a minor change in driving control this BMW would have been smashed into that cement beam. The cement beam it almost hit is reinforced concrete and does not give at all. One wrong move it could have been all over, but luckily this driver escaped scathe free!
This is why illegal drifting isn't a good idea. When you're on a track, the variables presented are less chaotic. You typically won't hit a small but solid structure like a concrete reinforced support beam. Track style racing usually takes some kind of effort to reduce damage as much as possible should the unthinkable occur. If this obstacle was on a track, it would have some kind of impact reduction barrier such as tires, water barrels, or spring bound retainers. Enjoy BMW drifting? You will love the following articles.
