There was a time when a 6 Series BMW was only a coupe version of a 5 Series. Back in 2012, BMW made the Grand Coupe, which added two more doors. Now this year at the Detroit Auto Show, BMW has changed things up again. Instead of offering a coupe version of the legendary 3 Series, those models will be branded with a 4, just to confuse us all. So, let us try and keep it straight. 3 Series is a four door sedan. 4 Series is a two door coupe.
Now that that is taken care of, let’s talk about what you can expect from the M4. Yes, it is just an M3 with two less doors. Power comes from a six-cylinder 3.0 liter engine that is turbocharged. Expect a good 425 horses and 506 pound-feet of torque. The M4 is lighter than the previous year’s M3 coupe by about 176 pounds.
"Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall concept,” Dr. Friedrich Nitschke, President of BMW M GmbH said in the official press release, "The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this philosophy.”
You will have to wait until closer to summer for full specs and pricing details when the M4 will go on sale as a 2015 model.
