BMI announces 2013 Road to Bonnaroo competition

The Road to Bonnaroo competition, which offers local and regional artists a chance to compete for the performance of a lifetime at the 2013 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, will return to The Mercy Lounge for a fifth year, lead sponsor BMI announced today.

For three nights, Feb. 25, Mar. 25, and Apr. 15, The Mercy Lounge's weekly "8 Off 8th" concert series will turn into Nashville's most heated Battle of the Bands. Each week 8 local and regional artists get just three songs each to impress a panel of industry judges and the local audience, who will vote one band into a slot on the Cafe Tent at Bonnaroo 2013.

Past Road to Bonnaroo winners have used their notoriety to springboard themselves to greater notoriety. 2010 winner Caitlin Rose has blossomed into one of Americana music's fastest rising stars. 2009 winners The Protomen have seen their notoriety climb from local to regional level since their performance. 2011 winner Chancellor Warhol has parlayed his win into headlining slots at club shows in and around Nashville and a high profile slot opening for Sleigh Bells at Vanderbilt's Rites of Spring Festival in 2012. 2012 winners Wild Cub, By Lightning, and Fly Golden Eagle have all snagged high profile opening slots and performances at local events like Live on the Green in 2012.

For now the 24 bands who have been chosen to compete in Road to Bonnaroo 2013 is being kept under wraps. The first 8 artists, who will perform Feb. 25, will be announced on Jan. 21.

If you'd like to attend the Road to Bonnaroo competition, sponsored by BMI, Yuengling, The Nashville Scene, Mercy Lounge, and Bonnaroo, you can head to The Mercy Lounge on Feb. 25. All Road to Bonnaroo shows, like all 8 off 8th shows, are free admission.
