It was a terrific day on the glistening waters of Palm Beach County on Saturday, October 5, 2013. The day was greeted with sunny skies and flat and inviting seas, a warm welcome that was treasured for this amazing event of philanthropy, also known as the 5th Annual Bluewater Babes Fish for a Cure.
As we all know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and funds are in the process of being raised in record numbers around the world. Right here in Palm Beach County, the 5th Annual Bluewater Babes Fish for a Cure took place to raise much needed funding for two local charities; Cancer Alliance of Help & Hope and H.O.W.-Hearing The Ovarian Cancer Whisper. These energetic, water-loving women have raised over $130,000 since 2009 for these specific charities, and as each year passes, the community participation, reception, support and results continues to get even larger. The tournament means even more to these ladies of the sea as the volunteer committee that has worked diligently to put the event all together is comprised of mostly women who are either breast cancer survivors, have family members that have been afflicted with cancer or these members have been touched by someone affected by cancer. Their dedication to the cause is admirable, and in 2012, over 93 boats entered this tournament of love.
It all began this year on Friday evening, October 4, 2013, at the Square Grouper Tiki Bar in Jupiter. This was a warm-up to bond with great friends and make magical memories. The boats headed out of the marina on Saturday morning with an extremely enthusiastic set of winners ready to bring in the fish. Each and every team was excited to be able to raise money for local breast and ovarian cancer patients in financial need. What could be more rewarding than that?
There was a long list of local sponsors from every walk of life; banks to retailers to doctors to law firms, landscaping, photography, media and more. Without their generosity, it could not have been fully possible.
It was a festive mix of fishing, boat decorating, cocktail and costume contests, an award party, lots of fabulous prizes and a chance to let cancer know that it can be beat with tournaments and events such as this one.
The culmination of a great water-filled weekend was a reflection to look back on those that we have lost as well as strong promise that those fighting cancer have an opportunity to win the battle. 'Lighting For Awareness' took place at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse as the evening hours brought darkness except for a glowing pink reminder of the lit-up lighthouse. It all started on Friday, October 4th and will end this evening, Sunday, October 6th.
It certainly is not too late to show your support. Visit the Bluewater Babes website to donate and check out all the novelty merchandise at their online shop. (http://www.fishforacure.com)
