Blueberry juice lowers blood sugar levels

© Sergey Peterman |

Every year the interest in "anti-aging" and disease-fighting natural products and dietary supplements increases, and the industry expands. Studies performed in University of Montreal show that blueberries are champions among powerful health foods.

After studying the blueberry juice consumption in mice, the scientists concluded that the blueberry juice aids in lowering the blood glucose levels (over 30% in just 3 days!) and improving the tissues' response to insulin. This makes blueberry juice an excellent preventative and management strategy for diseases like obesity and diabetes.

An interesting point is that the juice fed to mice was modified (with Serratia vaccinii bacteria) to contain more antioxidants. This type of blueberry juice is available for sale in most health stores.

Next time you are in the grocery store don't forget to pick up a carton of the blueberry juice--it is not only healthy, but also delicious!

Blueberries are known as a superfood however, according to the International Journal of Obesity study, it is specifically Fermented Blueberry Juice that offers anti-obesity and anti-diabetic benefits. The study was conducted on a group of mice Prone To Obesity, Insulin Resistance, Diabetes and Hypertension.

As you point out, when bio-transformed with bacteria from the skin of the fruit, North American lowbush blueberry juice holds promise as an anti-obesity and anti-diabetic agent. Serratia vaccinii, the blueberry flora bacteria, is said to increase the fruit's antioxidant effects.

Wouldn't it be great if this study resulted in the discovery of a great anti-obesity and anti-diabetic food?

Joanna Lynn, personally I do not think that there is ever going to be a "cure" for obesity, except the traditional healthy lifestyle. Products such as modified blueberry juice can help, but people who are likely to take advantage of it are likely health-conscious already anyway. Obesity most often manifests in the metabolic syndrome, and this is a multi-factorial symptom, it gets too complicated, and the antioxidants are not going to be the answer :(
