It was a milestone Saturday afternoon for Blue Valley Northwest's Clayton Custer, scoring 26 points to lead the Huskies to a 57-52 win over the DeLaSalle Islanders in the 2013 Timberwolves Shootout at Target Center and earning career win number 500 for head coach Ed Fritz.
The loss was the first of the season for undefeated and defending Class AAA champion DeLaSalle, ending a six game winning streak.
Custer took command of the Huskie offense, scoring the first basket 1:28 into the game. Reid Travis, who played quarterback for the Islanders in the fall, scored seven straight points untill Ben Richardson went on a four point Blue Valley Norttwest run.
Custer's basket put the Huskies in front and he hit a jumper at the horn to give Blue Valley Northwest a 24-19 halftime lead.
The second half began with DeLaSalle coming close to one on Luke Scott's basket cut the lead to one. They had a couple of chances to take the lead but Jarvis Johnson was called for offensive fouls. The game was tied at 46, 48 and 50 until Custer's basket put the Huskies in front. Vince Fritz hit a couple of free throws with :39.1 left to make the trip home down I-35 to Overland Park, KS.
Richardson added 14 points for Blue Valley Northwest and Vince Fritz had 10. Travis led DeLaSalle with 29 points and 15 rebounds and Scott had 13.
