It is Friday, December 21, 2012 and so far we are still here. This means that it should be a great day. This is especially true if you are a skier or snowboarder because this is the day that we have been waiting on for almost a year, opening day at Blue Knob Ski Resort.
Blue Knob will be opening their slopes today for the first time this season. This comes after opening day was delayed a week because of weather that did not provide snow or snow making opportunities. The resort will be aided by a little bit of snow on Friday and Saturday. Snow accumulations should total to 3 to 4 inches this weekend. This will be added to the three inches that they received overnight on Thursday. However, the wind is expected to be pretty strong throughout the day on Friday and Saturday.
The slopes at Blue Knob will open at 2:00 p.m. and remain open until 10:00 p.m. on Friday. Lift tickets for the day will be $15 with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross. They should have 2 slopes open, Upper Mambo Alley for beginners and Upper Route 66 for intermediate skiers. They are continuing to make snow when capable. The resort is expecting to be open regular hours on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.
Blue Knob is located only about 50 minutes east of Johnstown (only 35 miles). Take PA-53 North to PA-164. Turn right onto PA-164 in Portage and follow the road to Blue Knob Road. Follow Blue Knob Road to Ski Access Road which is just before entering Blue Knob State Park. This will take you to the parking area for skiing.
So get out and enjoy the first weekend of skiing and boarding and Blue Knob Johnstown. But bundle up because wind chills could be into the low twenties.
