The Arts District loves Handsome Coffee. But if you’re interested in any of their snazzy T-shirts or “damn handsome” coffee, you better get down to their roaster before Blue Bottle Coffee takes over.

On Monday, April 7, 2014, Blue Bottle Coffee announced their purchase of Handsome Coffee Roasters, who celebrated their two-year anniversary just this past February. Founded by Michael Phillips, Tyler Wells and Chris Owens, Phillips is the only founding partner remaining, and he will join the Blue Bottle team in a development role.

Wells and Owens already left Handsome for other endeavors, and Wells’ new coffee bar is set to open on 3rd Street in the Arts District, next to Alchemy Works and just down the street from Handsome. Wells told Sprudge he plans on good coffee and friendly service, as well as selling flowers and providing a small farm stand. Wells is teaming up with Joseph Pitruzzelli and Tyler Wilson of the nearby Wurstkuche beer hall. This yet-unnamed coffee bar will serve coffee roasted by Sightglass.

Owens’ new coffee project, called HiLux coffee, is a collaborative effort with Lightning Records that involves roasting and brewing coffee along with live music performance.

Blue Bottle Coffee was founded in 2002, and includes cafes and farmer’s market stands in San Francisco as well as locations in New York. The former Handsome Coffee location will turn into Blue Bottle’s first Los Angeles roastery and café. Blue Bottle has offered jobs to all existing Handsome employees.

Phillips indicated that the menu at this location will change, saying “sugar and milk might be served.”

Angelenos might miss their damn handsome coffee, but now they have three new coffee projects to sink their teeth into.
