For a lot of people, it’s hard to see a Broadway show on Broadway. Case in point: “Shrek the Musical,” which was released to Blu-ray on Oct. 15. At first glance, this version may not sound like it would be as enjoyable as seeing it live. But the cameras are able to capture all the thrills and excitement, and it provides a cost-effective way of seeing one amazing show.
Everyone knows the story of “Shrek,” the ogre from the swamps who saves the beautiful princess and lives happily ever after. Well, “Shrek the Musical” does tell the same story, but it expands on a lot of the things the movie didn’t. We see a young Shrek being sent away by his parents, who sing him a song of the dangers he’s to expect when he’s out on his own.
The performances are spectacular all around, and the musical numbers are well done. There aren’t as many childish jokes like there were in the original “Shrek” films, save for one or two songs. But this is something that “Shrek” lovers and maybe even some non-lovers will enjoy.
Blu-ray special features:
“From Swamp to Stage” goes behind the scenes of the musical with narration from actress Cameron Diaz, who was the voice of Fiona in the movie.
“Shrek the Musical Songbook” features all the songs from the performance and even has a few sing-alongs.
