Synopsis ~ From Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer comes all the fun, epic adventure and humor that ignited the original. Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. A tale of truth, betrayal, youth, demise — and mermaids! When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penélope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love or if she’s a ruthless con artist using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. Forced aboard the ship of the most feared pirate ever, Jack doesn’t know who to fear more —Blackbeard (Ian McShane) or the woman from his past. Directed by Rob Marshall, it’s filled with eye-popping battle scenes, mystery and all-out wit.

Depp is once again at his rum-soused and silly best and while I’ve never made it through a film yet with Penelope Cruz that I haven’t had to rewind and revisit certain points of her dialogue – that accent may be sexy to some, but for story structure it’s a nightmare – she nevertheless manages to hold her own with the cutthroats.
Rush’s “Barbosa” is again marvelously portrayed and as much a staple character now as Sparrow. Barbosa always demands attention and in this chapter Rush nearly single-handedly provides much of the film’s comedy.
Juxtaposing Barbosa, the real disappointment was the squandering of Ian McShane’s eagerly anticipated exuberating prowess as Blackbeard, whose character seemed to be limited to only a few meager lines of dialogue per scene and not really given the background worthy to both Blackbeard and McShane. Bill Nighy’s “Davy Jones” suffered similar problems in Deadman’s Chest, but nothing quite as severe.
Moving hard to starboard, there are two ships viewers can board when it comes to Special Features. One ship will have viewers wondering why the Special Features on the 5-Disc 3D version of Tides gets all the pirate booty – including over 75 minutes of extras – and the other ship’s passengers will thank Disney for not making them pay extra for a 3D version they can’t use, for which this set’s smaller offering of extras might be favorable to the price hike.
Containing only a director/executive producer’s commentary, short Blooper reel, LEGO versions of 6 key Tides scenes and Disney’s “Second Screen” feature – which of course does offer extras, provided you have a sync-able device – these modest features comprise the smallest set ever to climb aboard any of the Pirate sagas, but are still highly enjoyable and well worth a few doubloons.
So though Captain Sparrow has now made his fourth stop at your disc’s slot, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is yet another fantastic franchise voyage set sail on the ocean Blu.
