According to ‘THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — JANUARY 2013’ released today by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), total nonfarm payroll employment in the United States increased by 157,000 jobs during the month while the unemployment rate and number of unemployed persons changed little at 7.9 percent and 12.3 million respectively.
The report also revised the change in nonfarm employment for December 2012 from 155,000 jobs added up to 196,000 jobs added and the change for November 2012 was revised from 161,000 jobs added up to 247,000 jobs added.
As for specific industries, the January 2013 Employment Situation Report found that retail trade, construction, health care, wholesale trade, and mining added jobs over the month.
Retail trade employment rose by 33,000 jobs in January 2012, compared with an average monthly gain of 20,000 jobs in 2012. Within the industry, clothing stores added 10,000 jobs, motor vehicle and parts dealers added 7,000 jobs, and electronics and appliance stores added 5,000 jobs.
Employment in construction increased by 28,000 in January 2013, with nearly all of the job growth occurring in specialty trade contractors with 26,000 jobs gained. Since reaching a low in January 2011, construction employment has grown by 296,000 jobs, with one-third of the gain occurring in the last 4 months.
Health care employment continued to grow with 23,000 jobs added in January 2013. Within health care, ambulatory health care services added 28,000 jobs. Over the year, employment in health care has increased by 320,000 jobs.
Employment in wholesale trade increased with 15,000 jobs added in January 2013. Since the recent low point in May 2010, wholesale trade has added 291,000 jobs.
Mining employment increased by 6,000 jobs in January 2013. Employment in this industry has risen by 23,000 jobs over the past 3 months.
Other industries did not fare as well over the month. Employment in transportation and warehousing edged down in January 2013 with a loss of 14,000 jobs. Couriers and messengers lost 19,000 jobs over the month. Air transportation employment decreased by 5,000 jobs in January 2013.
Manufacturing employment was essentially unchanged in January and has changed little since July 2012. Employment in other major industries such as financial activities, professional and businesses services, leisure and hospitality, and government, showed little change over the month.
