Using smartphone technology, a new beauty app, Blow Me, provides everyone with the chance to enjoy an in-home blow out by a professional hair stylist. The idea is that for $40.00 dollars, a professional hairstylist comes to your home, on your schedule, and does a fantastic blow out which you've scheduled and paid for over your phone.
The convenient part is that money never changes hands as Blow Me operates like the popular app Uber, where all cash transactions are done by the app before the stylist comes to your house.
Currently the Blow Me app only offers services in the West Hollywood and Beverly Hills areas of Los Angeles.
Blow Me, The New Beauty App
Justin Howard - What inspired you to get into hair styling? Tell me about your story.
Sylvia Vaught - My dad was a hairdresser when I was a little girl, and from him I became fascinated with hair. From an early age I remember playing with the hair of everyone in my vicinity. Hair became like a fabric to me-- you could cut, bend, and manipulate it into a style that you like. That captivated me and still never gets old!
As a child when I figured out that people gave you money to do their hair, it was as if the clouds parted and angels sang before me-- I was sold! Being a hairdresser is in my blood, I love it and will always do it! I love transforming people through blowouts!
Justin Howard - "Blow Me" sounds... Provocative to say the least. Where did the app's name comes from?
Sylvia Vaught - My business partner and I sought out a name that no one would ever forget, and would trend well. We are both strong independent women who are willing to face the heat of the "double entendre!"
Justin Howard - We all love getting blow outs. How can you make your blow out last longer?
Sylvia Vaught - Using less product in your hair is a great way for it to last longer because product actually attracts more dirt and oils to the hair. Dry shampoo is awesome! It absorbs the excess oils that are present after a day or two on the scalp, and enables you to get more days of a great blowout. I love Kevin Murphy and Rene Furterer dry shampoos.
Justin Howard - Are there any hair trends you would love to be see be brought back and any current trends you would like to see disappear?
Sylvia Vaught - I would love to see the long and shaggy mop that Winona Ryder sported in the 90's come back. It looks sexy on almost any face shape! I would love for the super short crops to go away. Hair doesn't have to be super long, but the choices with even a bit of length become substantially more intriguing.
Justin Howard - Constant blow-drying of the hair can cause it to dry out and look “fried.” What are some tips to maintain moisture and shine on an ongoing basis?
Sylvia Vaught - A cold rinse allows the cuticle of the hair to shrink therefore causing it to look and feel healthier and shinier. A bit of an oil on damp hair such as Moroccan Oil always makes the hair feel amazing as it dries. The biggest aid in alleviating the "fried" look are the amazing keratin treatments that make hair feel and behave in a much smoother manner. I love Pravana Smooth of Keratin Complex. These treatments are revolutionary for making hair look and feel amazing!
Justin Howard - What motivated you to take this great idea and turn it into a business?
Elizabeth Cullen - Blow Me started organically with a conversation between Sylvie and me, and once we had the idea it just wouldn't die. Every conversation confirmed that it was a service that everyone would love. If we didn't do it someone else would. We had no choice we had to see it through.
Justin Howard - You’re initially starting service in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, when are you planning to add additional cities?
Elizabeth Cullen - We do not have a definite timeline, but we would love to be in New York within the next 6 months.
Justin Howard - If stylists want to sign up to be a part of the “Blow Me” revolution do they have to be located in West Hollywood or Beverly Hills or can they be located farther away to participate?
Elizabeth Cullen - Stylists can be located anywhere in Los Angeles. We encourage stylists to login where ever they are. There are no geographical limits to the App and lots of women all over Los Angeles want the perfect blowout.
Justin Howard - How did you come up with the name? It’s quite eye-catching. Were there other fun names you bounced around?
Elizabeth Cullen - Blow Me was the name pretty much from the first conversation. We just couldn't help ourselves.
