At Bloomingdale's Westfield Middle School, it's art teacher Deyana Matt who encourages participation in Pajama Spirit Day, October Orange and Black Day, and December Ugly Holiday Sweater Day.

On April 24, Matt will be organizing another event: Cakes for Charity.

“We tried it in 2012,” she said. “We raised $500 in an hour.”

Matt learned about the concept while attending a national art teacher’s conference in New York. The project melds artistic creativity with a family project that results in community outreach.

“I invited baker and former Westfield student, Alicia Eisenmann, to demonstrate cake decorating techniques during student lunch hours,” said Matt. Eisenmann owns the Delish Cakes bakery in Bloomingdale.

Parents agreed to help students bake and ice a cake at home. “Most parents said it was a fun family project,” said Matt.

Among the 54 entries in 2012 were: a ladybug cake, a half basketball cake, a Chicago Bulls logo cake, a Monopoly board cake featuring Rich Uncle Pennybags, a square wrestling ring with WWE contenders, a two-tier Angry Birds cake, and a three-tier waterfall cake.

Baker Eisenmann presented Delish Cakes gift cards to the best student and teacher entries. Then, $1 raffle tickets placed beside favorite cakes raised funds for the Bloomingdale Food Pantry.

On April 7, Eisenmann will once again provide free lunch time cake decorating demonstrations. Students, parents, teachers, and community members are welcome to attend.

“In addition, I want to have an October pumpkin carving challenge and a December gingerbread challenge,” said Matt. “I’m looking for a pumpkin carver and a gingerbread artist. If you know of anyone, please email me at: Dmatt@sd13.org.”
