The New York Post calls Mayor Bloomberg “Mayor Poppins”. Where does he get off telling people what they can or cannot drink? His bans are so outrageous and don’t make sense except for one thing. This tyrannical mayor seems bent on making things as difficult as he can for restaurants, pizza shops and fast food restaurants. Is he also going to tell grocery stores they can’t sell 2 liter bottles of soda? He has already made his attack on smoking and artificial trans fats in restaurants and packaged foods. This is no biggie because those things are more than not healthy; they can cause serious physical conditions. Those things have already been banned, but then he went on to other things like sugar and has required that sugar content be reduced by 25 per cent over a five year period.
So he bans 2 liter bottles of soda and now if anyone wants more than 16 ounces of their favorite soda, they are going to have to buy more of the smaller 16 ounce size causing the customer to have to pay more for what they want. He has even banned night club service mixers at their favorite night clubs.
Businesses that sell or serve any other kinds of drinks must make sure that they have a minimal amount of sugar. Anyone who violates the terms of the ban will have a $200 fine to pay.
There are two drawbacks that result from this ban on 2 liter bottles of soda. One drawback is the fact that in order for customers to get the amount of soda they want or need for a kid's party at a place like Chuck E. Cheese, they will have to buy more of the 16 ounce size which will cost them more than double what a 2 liter would cost. The other drawback is that it will create more plastic waste in the environment. So why is the EPA and environmentalists not protesting this ban?
Bloomberg has appointed himself as “Nanny” for the people of New York City. Will he now want to take his bans state-wide and if he can make it happen, nation-wide? As if it isn’t enough to ban the large sodas he also wants to ban Styrofoam cups because he doesn’t like them. He has even banned the use of pitchers at kid’s parties. Does he really think that one person would be drinking the entire pitcher? They are put there so that it can be shared.

His reasoning makes no sense at all. What about the pizza that’s delivered to your door or that you eat at a pizzeria? Is that going to be on his ban list too? If it is what will be next? What about the big bags of potato chips and pretzels, the big boxes of pop tarts and your favorite candy or the big candy bar? Is he going to try to ban the 2 liter sodas at private parties and picnics as well?
The fact that he’s getting away with his ridiculous bans is bad enough, but there is one question that comes to mind. Why aren’t the people who live there ranting and raving about their freedom to choose what they want to drink, how much and what they can order to drink with their delivery pizza? He takes his role as mayor much too far. The people are not children who need to be told that these things aren’t good for them so they will be taken away. Sure they are not healthy especially if you have too much of them, but if you’re an adult, you should be able to decide what size soda you want and whether you want the regular soda or the diet should be your choice.
It’s just puzzling why the people aren’t up in arms about being told what they can or cannot drink. Not even businesses seem to be questioning his right to make them stop serving the same drinks they’ve been serving since they opened their business. Have they been programed like robots so they don’t stand up for themselves? Why aren’t they getting down right angry and telling Bloomberg what he can do with his bans? He is playing the role of a “Nanny” and a tyrant and doing it quite well since it doesn’t seem to bother anyone there. Have people forgotten that those who hold government offices work for them? They don’t have to accept Bloomberg’s bans.
When you allow anyone in a government position to take a little power, they think they can take that power a little further and usually do until they are so confident that they can do whatever they want without any opposition, they do it. Then, when they don’t receive the opposition that they should, they decide they can take their power and go as far as they want with it.
That is what has happened with Obama. He was allowed to use his power to bypass Congress once and when nothing was done about it, he was confident that he could do it again and he did. Still, nothing was done so he continued to bypass Congress. After all, no one was doing anything to stop him. Now he thinks it’s his right as president. He continues to break Constitutional laws because he knows he can and nothing will be done about it.
It is just so hard to fathom that this is what our country has come to. Bloomberg has taken his role as mayor of NYC way over the limits. Is New York going to become the first “Nanny” state? If so, will it spread to other states? Will government officials ever be brought down out of their towers and be held accountable for what they have done to our country?
