Bloom's Taxonomy Discussion: Mouse Mother

There are six levels in the Bloom's Taxonomy discussion question process. After reading "The Mouse Mother," the teacher will ask questions from all six levels.

 The questions for each level are included below:

Level 1 - Ask the Knowledge Questions.

1. Teacher Says or Asks: TELL what happened from the Cat’s perspective.

Students Respond:

Cat: Planned to attack. Took flight after thought the Mouse Mother turned into a dog.

2. Teacher Says or Asks: TELL what happened from the Mouse Mother’s perspective.

Students Respond:
Mouse Mother: Impulse was to take flight. But then chose the fight option to save herself and her babies. Her intellect told her that cats are afraid of dogs, so by speaking the language of dogs, she was able to scare off the cat.

3. Teacher Says or Asks: TELL what happened from the Mouse Babies’ perspective.

Students Respond: The Mouse Babies watched the cat head toward them in full attack mode. Then they watched their mother speak a different language and thus, save the day. They cheered as the cat ran away.

Level 2 - Ask the Comprehension Questions.

1. Teacher Says or Asks: DESCRIBE the technique the Mouse Mother used to scare off the Cat.

Students Respond:The Mouse Mother spoke the language of dog.

Level 3 - Ask the Application Questions.

1. Teacher Says or Asks: The Mouse Mother had to speak the “second language” of Dog to successfully scare off the Cat. You too speak in a “second language” to the various people in your life.

GIVE AN EXAMPLE of the different kinds of “second languages” we use with our friends.

Students Respond:We probably use slang.

2. Teacher Says or Asks: GIVE AN EXAMPLE of the “second languages” we use with the adults in our lives such as teachers, principals, or preachers.

Students Respond:We probably use a more respectful tone

3. Teacher Says or Asks: GIVE AN EXAMPLE of the “second languages” we use with our parents.

Students Respond: We might be respectful. We might use attitude. We might use baby talk or wheedling tones to try to get our way, etc.

4. Teacher Says or Asks:GIVE AN EXAMPLE of the “second languages” we use with a coach.

Students Respond: Yes, Sir! Or Yes, Ma’am! Whatever you say!

5. Teacher Says or Asks: GIVE AN EXAMPLE of the different kinds of “second languages” we can use in our lives to help us through tough situations.

Students Respond:
* To get out of a tough situation, we might have to use diplomacy.

* Some kids feel as if they have to play the “tough boy” or “tough girl” in order to stand up to some kids.

* Sometimes, you can joke your way out of a tough spot.

* We need to check in with our instincts and intuition to figure out what way would be the most appropriate for different situations.

Level 4 - Ask the Analysis Questions.

1. Teacher Says or Asks: Besides the cat and the mouse, ANALYZE other animals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and insects that you can think of and EXAMINE how they handle fearful situations.

Students Respond: Accept Reasonable Answers

Level 5 - Ask the Synthesis Questions.

1. Teacher Says or Asks: PREDICT what would have happened if the Mouse Mother gave in to her first impulse toward FLIGHT.

Students Respond: She and/or her babies would have been killed.

2. Teacher Says or Asks:Humans as well as creatures in the animal kingdom all have that FIGHT OR FLIGHT Instinct. PREDICT in what ways humans can respond differently to fearful situations that animals probably wouldn’t or couldn’t.

Students Respond:
Humans can self-mentor and utilize self-control in their actions and reactions. Animals generally act on instinct only.

Level 6 - Ask the Evaluation Questions.

Mouse Mother Fight or Flight Continuum

1. Teacher Says or Asks: EVALUATE where the cat fell on the continuum at the beginning of the story and where it fell at the end of the story.

Students Respond: The Cat chose FIGHT at the beginning of story and FLIGHT at the end.

2. Teacher Says or Asks: EVALUATE where the Mouse Mother fell on the continuum at the beginning of the story and where it fell at the end of the story.

Students Respond: The Mouse Mother chose FLIGHT at the beginning of story and FIGHT at the end.
