On Tuesday, March 4, Spokane-area author Frank Zafiro announced on his website that ebook editions of "Blood on Blood", the first volume in a series he co-wrote with Jim Wilsky, will be free on Amazon from March 5 to March 9 as part of their March Craziness book promotion.
"Blood on Blood" is part of Wilsky and Zafiro's Ania Trilogy, a series linked by the mysterious femme fatale Ania Kozak. In each book, she becomes involved with two male protagonists as she uses her feminine wiles for financial gain. In "Blood on Blood", two half-brothers living in Chicago race against time and each other to find stolen diamonds.
Zafiro gave a synopsis of the novel on his site.
According to Zafiro, "When half-brothers Mick and Jerzy Sawyer are summoned to their father’s prison deathbed, it isn’t for a tearful goodbye. The spiteful old man tells the two estranged brothers about an old diamond heist with outstanding loot, and sets them on a path of cooperation and competition to recover the jewels.
"Jerzy is the quintessential career criminal, fresh out of a short bit and looking to get back into the action right away. Mick is the failed cop and tainted hero struggling to get by with a clean life that doesn’t seem to ever pay off. Both men see this score as their ticket out of Chicago.
"Throw in the mysterious, blond Ania, and Blood on Blood is hard boiled Hardy Boys meets Cain and Abel. Jerzy and Mick battle each other for all of it — the diamonds, the girl, and survival — and nothing else matters…not even blood."
On his website, Zafiro explained the unusual process he and Wilsky used to write the novel.
According to Zafiro, "I co-wrote this book with Jim Wilsky. We used a dual first person narrative with alternating chapters. In other words, I wrote one character and he wrote the other. We did both in the first person, which works out well because the reader gets both the immediacy and intimacy of the first person but still is privy to a wider range of viewpoints than just a single narrator. We used this same format in the sequels, 'Queen of Diamonds' and 'Closing the Circle'."
The book starts with one chapter focusing on Mick and Jerzy's dying father before launching into a fast-paced, suspenseful story that should keep crime fiction fans in the greater Spokane area eagerly turning the pages. The story includes double crosses, a mob hit and a treasure hunt that takes the brothers all over Chicago. In the middle of it all is Ania who manipulates both Mick and Jerzy without either of them catching on until it is too late.
Zafiro dropped a hint that the other two books in the Ania Trilogy will be included in March Craziness as well, but nothing has been confirmed at this time. During March Craziness (which will actually continue into part of April), Amazon Kindle ebook editions of several novels by Wilsky and Zafiro and a short story collection by Zafiro called "Tales of River City" will either be free or available at discounted prices.
Zafiro is active on Facebook and Twitter and regularly offers updates on those social media networks about March Craziness, upcoming appearances and other news that would be important to his readers. Following his Twitter feed would be a good way for book lovers in the Spokane area to keep current on what is being promoted during March and April.
Kindle owners who enjoy "Blood on Blood" and don't want to wait to see what else Zafiro and Wilsky have planned for March Craziness have a few options if they want to buy the other two books in the series. The second book "Queen of Diamonds" currently retails for $2.99, or $12.99 for the handsome print edition. The ebook edition of the final book "Closing the Circle" retails for $4.99. The whole series is also available in an anthology called "Ania: a Trilogy" that retails for $9.99.
