The upcoming 'blood moon' has undoubtedly excited many astronomers and amateur stargazers alike and the event is just one of four 'blood moons' expected to happen over the next year and a half. As detailed in an April 2 report from DesignNTrend, in just two weeks, on Tuesday April 15, a total lunar eclipse will occur, a phenomenon that occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon.

The following text further explains the 'blood moon' phenomenon.

"As the Earth begins to cast its shadow on the moon, the moon will partially disappear from view. Then the moon begins to appear brighter with a red or orange hue thanks to Earth's atmosphere bending toward the moon," DesignNTrend writes.

This eclipse will be visible from different parts of the world, including our country. In its total phase the surface of moon will have a deep red tone, a moment that will last approximately 78 minutes.

According to information released by, the initial stage of eclipse will begin at 3:07 a.m. EST. The 'blood moon' appearance will be visible for most of the duration of the eclipse, however, the peak is at 3:36 a.m. The culmination of the phenomenon is at 4:25 a.m. EST, according to the space agency.

To observe this phenomenon a special viewing instrument is not necessary, because unlike solar eclipses, they do not cause damage to the eye.

This eclipse is the first of four total lunar eclipses (the following three occur on October 8, 2014, April 4, 2015 and the last on September 28, 2015), a phenomenon known as a tetrad. The last occurred in 2004 and the next will be in the period from year 2032 to 2033.
