The biological parents of the "blonde angel" girl named Maria have been found. The young girl had been taken from the Greek Roma people caring for her, and many worried this may have been a case of child trafficking. The Associated Press via Yahoo! News shared the updates on Oct. 25.
Maria's biological parents are Atanas and Sasha Ruseva. They are a Bulgarian Roma couple, and the little girl was born in Greece four years ago when Sasha was working as an olive picker. She gave away the baby because she was too poor to care for her. This does sync up with what the couple caring for her, Christos Salis and Eleftheria Dimopoulou (also known as Selini Sali), had said about their getting the girl.
The Roma couple in Greece could still be in trouble for the informal adoption. According to Greek law, even when a child is voluntarily given away in an informal adoption, child abduction charges can be brought forth. Their lawyer, Costas Katsavos, indicates that the couple hopes to be released from custody and get the child back. Authorities, however, are still checking into the situation. If money exchanged hands between the couples, for example, both sides could face charges.
For now Maria the "blonde angel," as she was dubbed by some media outlets, remains in protective custody.
