A little “blonde angel,” which is the name given to a little girl who was found living with gypsies in Greece, has gained global attention and is giving families of abducted children cause for hope. It is not known how old this blonde angel is and the gypsy family she was found living with have given authorities several conflicting reports of how she came to the gypsies, according to NBC News on Oct. 21.
More than 10,000 calls and emails have come into the Greek authorities with people offering clues and inquiring about the child, as the investigation is in full swing to find her biological parents. The majority of the calls have been from people in Greece, but emails about this little girl have come in from across Europe, United States, Canada, South Africa and Australia.
The blonde angel is possibly from a northern or eastern European origin. She is possibly from Scandinavian or Bulgarian decent, police speculate. When authorities raided a Roma settlement for suspected drug trafficking, this little girl, who was being called Maria by the couple who were raising her, was spotted peeking out from under a blanket. DNA testing confirmed she was not the biological child of the couple calling themselves her parents.
The little girl speaks very little Roma dialect and Greek, leading police to believe her origin to be somewhere other than Greece. This blonde angel remains in a hospital as tests continue today to find her origin.
The couple who were raising this little girl have up to 14 children, six of the children were registered as being born within the last 10 months. This is a big money maker as the Greek government pays the couple $3,800 in child benefits for all the kids they’ve registered.
The little girl is happy and friendly with the people around her in the hospital. The couple who were calling the blonde angel their daughter are expected to appear in court today, Monday. The 40-year-old woman and 39-year-old man were arrested and charged with abducting a minor. Police are also investigating to see if the little girl was a victim of trafficking.
The several different scenarios that the couple have offered up to the police as to how this blonde angel came to them ranged from finding her to the mother handing the child over to them. They first offered the story that they found her wondering around in a parking lot, but their final explanation consists of a Bulgarian woman giving the little girl to them when she was just an infant. Police report the couple offered five explanations in all before settling on the Bulgarian woman giving up her baby.
The lawyer for the 39-year-old man and 40-year-old woman, Kostas Katsavos, will appear in court today and he concedes that the child is not legally adopted by the parents, but he says that the child was legitimately given to them. He said they are looking for the Bulgarian woman who is Maria’s mother to clear his client’s names for the abduction charges, according to The Week.
This case has given much hope to families like the McCann and Needham families who have had their children abducted. This blonde, green-eyed little girl is healthy and was living with gypsies, most likely because of the money she brought in for the family through child services. This could be the case for other children who were abducted and never found.
