Montreal benefited from another blockbuster year in Hollywood and other foreign film productions in 2013

Quebec Film and Television commissioner Hans Fraikin said that total spending by Hollywood and foreign movie productions last year came to $273-million, up from $257-million in 2012.

"Five consecutive growth years, every year was higher than the last one," Fraikin said.

Montreal film crews and visual effects studios had a field day with director Bryan Singer's new X-Men movie that was shot in and around town.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past spent nearly $100-million dollars in the city," Fraikin said, the film shoot accounting for a third of the total spending.

But the super-powered mutants weren't the only ones helping the local industry.

"We probably had 15 movies shoot last year. A big one was District 13, which was the late Paul Walker's last movie," Fraikin said.

Of course, Montreal can't get everything: Fraikin said they lost out to Germany on the Keanu Reeves vehicle, Passengers.

"You win some, you lose some," Fraikin laughed.

But Fraikin said for the most part, advantageous tax credits and top notch film crews are what's keeping Quebec near the top of the moviemaking A-list.

Fraikin added they're working on another record year, starting this spring.

"We have three projects confirmed already and I expect 2014 to be another good year."
