Block's on SE Clinton: PDX eatery offers a healthy way to enjoy comfort food

See also

Block's has the comfort foods you crave... pastries, Reuben sandwiches, burgers, potato salad and pancakes. But the best thing about Block's is that these delights are all healthy foods. Block's offers many gluten free items and creatively limits fat, sugar and salt in their offerings. But they don't limit the good flavors.

On Tuesday, December 17th, the restaurant that was formerly Compote Café reopens to the public as Block’s, a neighborhood café.

Owner Shana Lane-Block has pulled inspiration for the décor and menus from her family and history. Enjoy the family photos of her Eastern European ancestors while you partake of some delightful latkes with sour cream and house-made applesauce.

Their gravlax sandwiches are made with fresh-caught salmon that is house-cured. Even the bread is healthy for you... a dark rye made without gluten.

With simply prepared, fresh menu items at the forefront, Lane-Block lets local ingredients and made-from-scratch cooking take the spotlight. On opening day, Block’s will donate a percentage of its sales to neighboring Abernathy Elementary to celebrate its place in this SE Clinton St. neighborhood.

My top picks from the menu include anything made with their hearty biscuits (great with local Marionberry jam) or as a breakfast sandwich with egg and their marvelous house-made chicken sausage. For lunch try the Turkey Reuben. The turkey is house-brined and roasted. Add in kraut, cheese and the house-made dressing and you have a delightfully delicious Reuben without all the "bad stuff." Both the house-made potato salad and cole slaw were excellent and would make a good side for the Reuben.

If you just have time to stop by quickly in the morning, grab a healthy breakfast cookie to take with you to start your day.

Look forward to spring and warmer weather so you can enjoy a meal on their ample back patio. Block's is a welcome addition to Portland Oregon's Southeast.

The restaurant will feature all day breakfast and lunch, an extensive kid’s menu, a grab-and-go market, and table service. To-go items will also be available for dinner until the restaurant closes at 6 p.m. on weekdays. Block’s will be open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Saturday – Sunday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Offerings include cocktails, beer and wine.
