Thursday, an ugly blobfish won the unofficial title of the world’s ugliest animal by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, according to the BBC. The news has created a buzz Friday as people around the world wonder what creatures were included in the competition. See the video to the left.
The blobfish lives off the coast of Australia and it eats crabs and lobsters. The gelatinous fish looks sticky and overweight.
The winner of the contest was announced yesterday at the British Science Festival in Newcastle. The award for the ugliest animal was decided by a public vote after photos were submitted to the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. Officially, the blobfish was called an "aesthetically challenged" animal.
Other contenders included a monkey with a large pig nose, a turtle with a pig nose, and a scrotum frog. Simon Watt, President of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society said he hoped the competition draws attention to the fact that these animals may become extinct. The blobfish gets caught in fisherman’s nets and is in danger of becoming extinct.
