If you're heading to Idaho this spring, be aware that Burley BLM Field Office in the Twin Falls area has a seasonal closure on some roads. The closure runs for another month, until March 15, to give mule deer and sage grouse some peace and quiet and the land time to recover. RVing boondockers can either drop in at the office, call them, or keep an eye out for posted signs. Gates will make the seasonal closure even more obvious.
Right now, the following BLM Idaho roads and trails linked to them are closed:
- Dry Creek
- Cherry Spring
- Indian Springs ( from 1½ miles south of Foothills Road)
- North Cottonwood Creek
All private motorized vehicles are banned. If you see such a vehicle on those roads, it'll be some kind of rescue or emergency service. You can still cycle, hike and ride horses in the area. For details, call Dennis Thompson, Burley Field Office at 208-677-6600, or drop in at Burley Field Office, 15 East 200 South, Burley. (Story continues below.)
Temperatures in the Burley area this time of year generally drop below freezing at night and are not more than about 45 degrees during the day, so chances are the closures aren't much of a hardship to most boondockers.
There's a free campground in the area, McClendon, accessible via Conner Creek Road near Malta, and the Milner Historic Recreation Area, along the Snake River, also offers fishing and camping for a mere $5/night, while the Salmon Falls Creek reservoir offers both primitive and developed camping, the latter with a dump station.
