BLM California King Range NCA: Humboldt County free lectures, Redway, Lost Coast

BLM King Range National Conservation Area has kicked off its free lecture series, held at Healy Senior Center, 456 Briceland Road, Redway, California (Humboldt County). The first lecture, about identifying amimal tracks, was on January 10. Lectures are at 7 p.m. and feature BLM and Lost Coast Interpretive Association speakers experienced in the great outdoors.

Redway is just north of Garberville in Humboldt County, is easily accessible via U.S.Highway 101. It is east of Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the giant trees. Winter weather isn't warm, but it's not likely to be too far below freezing, and coastal snow is relatively rare. Driving a further 16 ½ miles takes you across the King Range and to the Lost Coast. Call the BLM King Range Project Office on 707-986-5415 for more details, email them at ca338@blm.gov, or show up in person at the King Range National Conservation Area Office, in Whitethorn, California.

If you want to head into the back country, you need a free backcountry permit, available at trailheads, the Whitethorn Office, or at Arcata Field Office (1695 Heindon Road, Arcata, call 707-825-2300). Campfire permits are required.

There are several rustic BLM campgrounds on the Lost Coast, about 16 ½ miles west of Garberville or Redway, ranging from $5.00 to $8.00 per night. Fees here may be reduced or removed during national park fee-free days.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park also has several campgrounds, but no RV dump; find a dump station in Fortuna, to the north. There is no free boondocking in the King Range area or close to Redway for the free King Range NCA lecture series.
