Blizzard wreaks havoc among shippers

The weekend blizzard in the Eastern U.S. brought shipping to a standstill for several Jacksonville shipping companies.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) declared a state of emergency due to heavy snow in the Northeast. More than two feet of snow fell along with gale-force winds.

Aqua-Gulf Xpress Trucking suspended trucking operations. The firm told its customers, “Trucks will not be dispatched today, all appointments for deliveries and pickups will be rescheduled when weather and road conditions allow.”

It was a similar story from Crowley Liner Services.

La Princesa V 52 which was scheduled to sail on Christmas Day but was “severely delayed due to weather and blizzard conditions in the Northeast,” the firm stated.

Its current arrival is expected at 7 p.m. tomorrow.

All cargo that was scheduled to sail on that vessel will now be combined with cargo that is booked for the El Rey 53 and will sail on Thursday. Voyage 53 will be cancelled.

Horizon Lines fared no better.

Its Elizabeth Terminal closed yesterday.

“Cargo discharged from Horizon Trader voyage TO403N will be made available upon reopening of the terminal,” the company stated in a notice to customers.
