Blizzard conditions, record cold, and a surge of warm air top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here are the events that happened on February 11.

1885 - A low temperature of -22° occurred in Calumet.

1899 - Muskegon records their all-time record low of -30° and only sees a record cool “high” temperature of -3°. Grand Rapids falls to a record -21° and only has a “high” temperature of . This is also a record for the coolest high temperature for the date. Lansing sets records with -22° for a low and -1° for a high. A low temperature of -45° occurred in Stambaugh and -34° at Sault Ste. Marie.

1999 - A surge of warm air ahead of a cold front brings all-time record high February temperatures to much of Lower Michigan. February records include 67° at Muskegon and 69° at both Grand Rapids and Lansing. Battle Creek hits 72°. The temperature rose to 70° in Detroit. This is the earliest 70° day ever recorded in the city of Detroit!

2008 - A powerful Arctic cold front pushed through the Upper Great Lakes on the afternoon and evening of the 9th and produced blizzard conditions in lake effect snow and blowing snow over portions of Upper Michigan into the 10th. Bitterly cold wind chills of 30 below to 40 below zero were observed over much of Upper Michigan from the night of the 9th into the morning of the 11th. Temperatures of 5 to 10 below zero combined with wind gusts over 35 mph at times to produce wind chills between 25 below and 38 below zero across Dickinson and Iron Counties on the 10th. Although winds subsided by the evening of the 10th, actual temperatures fell to 10 to 15 below zero during the early morning of the 11th with wind chills near 30 below zero. Many schools were either canceled or delayed on the 11th. AAA Michigan reportedly responded to numerous motorists' calls of dead batteries or fuel line freezes during the extreme cold.
