Gonzo may be blind, but that hasn’t stopped the Alaskan husky from fulfilling his job as one of 120 dogs at the Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel in Jefferson, New Hampshire. While he may not be the most efficient dog on the team, Gonzo, doesn’t seem to treat his blindness as an obstacle, thanks in part to the every ready assistance of his bother and teammate Poncho, who works hard to keep him in line.
“Even though he can’t see, he still knows when hookups are happening, commented kennel manager Ben Morehouse. “He is still very aware. When you have a dog such as Gonzo, with such a want and a drive and a desire, you try it and let him run.”
He also admitted that while Poncho and Gonzo are “probably some of the goofiest dogs you put out in harnesses, they’re just fun.”
Muddy Paw conducts sled tours ranging from 20-minute trips from the Mount Washington Hotel to Bretton Woods to a 50-mile overnighter billed as the “Longest Dog Sled Ride in the Northeast.”
