If you are in the mood for a quick getaway and lungs full of mountain fresh air, head up Big Cottonwood Canyon for a quick hike to Lake Mary.
Located just east of Brighton Ski Resort, the trailhead to Lake Mary can lead you to 5 different lakes if you are feeling more adventurous. The trail to Lake Mary is about 1.5 miles, and it gains about 760 feet in elevation. It is a highly used trail so it is easy to follow. There are even a few strategically placed benches along the way if you want to take in the view.
As you head up toward the lake, you will walk through a meadow and under ski lifts. Then, you will make your way up into a more forested area with tall trees surrounding the trail. Soon you will begin to hear water and even cross a small wooden bridge. As you near the lake, you will see the backside of the cement dam that holds the water in at Lake Mary. Once you reach the lake you will have a great view of the granite bowl that it sits in.
As you sit and take in the view, a chipmunk will likely come up to you in search of food, even though it is already very well fed by other hikers.
This hike should take about an hour or so. Keep it in mind the next time you want to get away and experience a great hike with wonderful views and cute creatures.
