Blame Drew's Cancer to benefit charity on Twitter

Twitter users can now voice their frustrations with anything from traffic to a hangnail by joining the movement, "Blame Drew's Cancer", to benefit charity.

The idea came about after Drew Olanoff was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma on May 20, 2009. He found himself blaming everything on his cancer: "Lost keys, wallet, Phillies losing. Sixers picking a bad coach. Twitter going down and/or being slow." In an effort to stay optimistic and light-hearted in the face of cancer, he decided to invite others to blame their troubles, big or small, on his cancer, as well, via the social media networking tool, Twitter.

To make the idea even more meaningful, Drew decided to find sponsors to donate one dollar for every participant in the movement to Livestrong, a foundation created to provide support to people affected by cancer.

Olanoff's idea also serves another crucial purpose, as it creates a venue for an open dialogue about cancer. He states on his website:

Cancer discussion upsets some people, makes them uncomfortable.  It is nothing to run away from.  Medicine is amazing these days.  Technology is amazing.

And as studies show, Hodgkin Lymphoma has a 80% cure rate. Olanoff feels very fortunate and wants to share that gratitude with others.

I will win.  And I will dedicate all I have in me to help others who are far worse off than I am, and I will do what I do…educate.

To participate in this movement, simply Blame Drew's Cancer for anything you choose by tweeting with the hashtag #BlameDrewsCancer and the tweet will go to the Blame Drew's Cancer site. If you do not already have a Twitter account, you may join here.

Hodgkin Lymphoma (formerly known as Hodgkin's Lymphoma) is a cancer of the lymphatic system that occurs most often in young adults. Though it is the least common form of lymphoma, it has been studied the most, with research breakthroughs now allowing over 80% of patients to be cured.
