Thursday night's Section 5A championship game at the Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis had a familiar ring as once again the Breck Mustangs took on the defending Class A champion Blake Bears. Karlie Lund's goal with 5:55 left in regulation led the Bears to a 6- 4 win over the Mustangs and a return trip to next week's state tournament in St. Paul.

Blake began the first period scoring with a pair of goals. Carly Bullock got a pass from Sylvie Wallin and she scored the first goal. Lilia Evenson's neutral zone wrist shot had the distance of an NBA three pointer but she only got one for the goal. Breck got a goal back as Izzy Gleekel's shot clanked off the right post and entered the net. The Bears struck back on a goal from Jordan Chancellor and the Mustangs ended the first period scoring on Leah Schwartzman's goal from the right slot.

Both teams added a goal in the second period. Freshman Grace Zumwinkel scored for Breck on a rebound and Blake goal came from the center slot as Sarah Chute scored on a rebound.

Schwartzman began the third period scoring for the Mustangs with a goal inside the left face off circle. But Breck's chances of taking a .sub .500 to the X next week would end as Blake would score two goals. The first was the eventual game winner on Lund's center slot goal with 5:55 remaining and the clincher would come while Bullock was serving a tripping penalty. Mustangs head coach Ronda Englehart pulled goalie Jenna Brennaman for a sixth attacker and Chancellor would send the puck as fast as cars going down Hennepin Ave. and into the open net with :20 left.

The Bears will play in the Class A state quarterfinals Wednesday, February 19 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Time and opponent to be determined. The Mustangs conclude their season with a record of 12-15-1
