After forcing a second game to decide the Section 4AA baseball championship by beating the Blake Bears 3-1 , could the eighth seeded Holy Angels Stars continue its improbable post season run with a win in the deciding game?
It wouldn't happen since Robert Dworsky pitched a three hitter to lead the Bears to a 3-0 win over the Stars Friday afternoon at Palm Field in St. Anthony Village.
The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, June 5 at Midway Stadium but had to be changed due to Blake's graduation.
The Bears got on the board in the top of the first on Eric Stolt's home run over the left field fence.
Another long ball for Blake came in the top of the third from junior captain Mark Lyman as he hit one to almost the same spot as Stolt increasing the lead to two. They would add another run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Bobby Mitchell that scored Stu Hesdorfer. They had a chance to tack on some more runs with two outs and the bases loaded but Tom Mahoney grounded out to second base.
The key to the game would be Dworsky, holding Holy Angels to two hits through six innings and recording seven strikeouts. Things would get interesting for the Stars in the bottom of the seventh as Joe Sullivan led off with a single, Jack Piram was hit by a pitch and Jared Thorp would draw a walk to load the bases. Would there be a walkoff win to clinch the Stars first trip to state since 2001? Not on this warm Friday afternoon as Jake Orner flied out to left field and Andrew Willner's ground out to Dworsky ended their remarkable run.
Ryan Noack, Blake's ninth batter went 3-3.
The Bears increased their record to 19-5 and will play in the state Class AA quarterfinals on Thursday, June 12 at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud. The Stars concluded their season with a record of 13-14.
