Blake Bears blast Warroad Warriors for Class A title

Shawn Reid's maiden voyage as Blake Bears head coach turned out to be a big success with Carly Bullock scoring two goals and assisting on two others en route to a 7-2 victory over the Warroad Warriors in the Class A championship game Saturday afternoon at the Xcel Energy Center iin St. Paul.

Reid replaced Brano Stankovsky, who passed away from a stroke last April after 14 years behind the Bears bench.

It was the fourth state title for the Minneapolis school. Blake took home championship trophies in 2003, 2007 and 2009.

The Bears struck first on Lilia Evenson's goal from the left point. Bullock put Blake up by two as she skated into the left slot and fired it into the net. Warroad responded a minute later as Demi Gardner fed Lynn Astrup and she scored on a right wraparound. It was Bullock, the Bears freshman who extended the lead to two on her goal from the right slot. Karlie Lund concluded the first period scoring as she reived a pass from Dani Cameranesi in the right slot and she slotted it in the net.

It was Cameranesi who scored Blake's lone second period goal, driving down the left side like a car going down Excelsior Blvd.and the puck took a picture of the net.

The Bears tallied twice in the third period, starting with Kate Fraley's goal that deflected off Warrior goalie Danielle Knott and into the net. Knott replaced Dayton Hilgert in the nets in the second period. Jordan Chancellor capitalized on a Warroad turnover, stealing the puck from Courtney Bethune and putting it past Knott. Warroad added a goal with 5:05 left when Kayla Gardner circled the net, found Lisa Marvin in the right slot and scored.

Blake concluded the season with a record of 22-5-3. Warroad finished 26-3-1.

In the third place game, Red Wing beat South St. Paul 3-2. Hibbing/Chisholm took home the consolation championship trophy with a 2-1 win over Mound-Westonka at Ridder Arena.

The attendance for the Class A championship session was 1,528.
