Bladensburg police shoot, kill woman with knife

Bladensburg, Md. --- Town police shot and killed a woman in an apartment hallway after officers say she lunged at them with a knife.

The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Friday when police say officers received a complaint of a woman brandishing a knife at the Hillcrest Village apartments in the 4200 block of 53rd Avenue.

Police say three uniformed Bladensburg police officers had responded to the incident. The preliminary investigation, states a BPD news release, indicates that the woman lunged at the officers with a knife. That is when police say officers discharged their guns at the woman. She was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center where she died. The decedent has been identified as 43-year-old Tonya Michelle Buggs of that address.

The officers involved are assigned to the town's patrol division. They have been placed on administrative leave. Prince George's County Police Department is conducting the investigation in this case.

The town's police chief told WUSA-TV that this was the first departmental shooting for the town since 1978.
