Blackhawks to face Capitals in DC on New Year's Day in Winter Classic

The NHL announced on Sunday that the Chicago Blackhawks will be taking on the Washington Capitals on January 1, 2015 in the Winter Classic.

The game will be broadcast nationally on NBC and start around noon.

No location has been announced for the game but it is likely that the two teams will face off either at Nationals Park, RFK Stadium or FedEx Field according to which previously reported the story on Friday.

“It’s an honor to be selected by the NHL to participate in the 2015 Winter Classic,” said Hawks president John McDonough. “This is another marquee event for the Blackhawks and we’re looking forward to spending New Year’s Day in our nation’s capital.”

This will be the third outdoor game for the Blackhawks who previously hosted the Winter Classic on New Year’s Day in 2009 at Wrigley Field against the Detroit Red Wings and hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 1 this season at Soldier Field. This is the first time that the Blackhawks will be on the road for an outdoor game.

The Capitals previously played the Penguins at Heinz Field on New Year’s Day in 2011. This will be the second outdoor game for the Capitals and the first time they have hosted a game.

In addition to the Winter Classic the two teams will be featured on HBO's 24/7 which will lead up to the game. More details will be announced in the near future about the game.

In outdoor games, the Blackhawks are 1-1 and the Capitals are 1-0 and this is the first Winter Classic that will not feature two teams from the same conference.
