Even with Minnesota dominating the early stretch of play and compiling a 10-7 edge in shots in the first period, it was the Blackhawks who took a lead into the locker room. Patrick Sharp would score his second goal of the year at 17:33.
During the second period, it was Corey Crawford who was spectacular. He made a save with his helmet at one point. But he couldn’t keep them all out of the net. Crawford was hung out to dry when Duncan Keith tried to step up and cut off a play at center ice; but Mikhail Granlund made a beautiful pass to spring Jason Pominville who fired a slap shot past Crawford at 11:27. The Blackhawks would immediately respond as Niklas Backstrom was slow to get up and Patrick Kane found Sheldon Brookbank who unleashed a slap shot into an open net at 13:21. There would be more scoring for the Blackhawks on the power play. Brent Seabrook kept the puck in the zone after it missed the net. He found Nick Leddy who fired a slap shot over the glove of Backstrom at 16:43.
The final period would see the Blackhawks assert their dominance. Brandon Saad would make a ridiculous behind his back pass to Kane on a two on one for a tap in at 2:47 of the third period. It would only get better for Saad who made a sweet move and then slid a backhand through the five hole of Backstrom at 8:43 to cap the scoring.
