The Chicago Blackhawks lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-5 in overtime on Thursday evening. Next up for the Blackhawks a return home as they play the Minnesota Wild at home on Saturday evening in their first game in a three game in four day stretch.
For the first time in a long time, the Blackhawks would find themselves down early in the first period as Matt Carle scored on the power play at 6:28 of the period. Even with a 12-4 edge in shots, the Blackhawks would be down after the first period.
It wouldn’t get much better as just 1:24 into the second period, Nate Thompson would score his first of the year shorthanded. But the Blackhawks would answer with a flurry as Bryan Bickell scored at the 9:00 mark. The new first line of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa would connect as Hossa tied the game at 10:36. But Nikolai Khabibulin could not keep the Blackhawks tied as he gave up a goal to Steven Stamkos at 17:21. However, Patrick Kane would tie the game again as he caused a turnover and raced past the defense and buried a shot that trickled through the five hole at 18:53.
If you thought the second period was wild, it would only get wackier in the third period. Andrew Shaw would put the Blackhawks ahead with a power play goal 1:33 into the period. But Victor Hedman would tie the game up at 11:03 with his first goal of the year. The Lightning would strike again as Stamkos scored his second of the night on the power play at 17:31. But in a freaky occurrence, the Lightning would throw the puck back to a defenseman and the puck deflected off of his foot and past Ben Bishop to tie the game at 18:11. Jonathan Toews would get credit for the goal.
In overtime, the Lightning would take care of business as Stamkos started the game winning play. After his shot was stopped, Nikolai Khabibulin found himself completely out of position and Martin St. Louis put in an easy game winner 1:16 into overtime.
What it means
The Blackhawks finish the first ten games with perhaps the strangest 15 point result ever. They have gone 6-1-3 but have not looked strong doing so. The Blackhawks two goals in the third period were their first goals in the third period since the season opener. The Blackhawks will now head into the part of their schedule that focuses more on Western Conference teams where they will need to rack up the points.
