Blackbird Industries Inc. is a leading remanufacturer of late model outboard motors with over 40 years experience in the industry. Based on their two decades of industry insight, the professionals at Blackbird offer information on outboard motors, remanufacturing, and keeping a boat in optimal condition.
An outboard motor is a self-contained unit that includes the engine, gearbox and propeller or jet drive. It is designed to be bolted to the outside of the transom, and linked to the controls. They are designed to pivot over the mountings which control the direction of the thrust.
An important consideration when choosing a motor is to make sure that it is a good match for the hull in terms of power and shaft length. Hulls up to 17 feet in length will support outboards of up to 4 cylinders generating 15 to 135 horsepower. The powerful V6 and V8 cylinder blocks are suitable on boats of 37 feet or longer.
Promoting Optimal Performance
Basic service at Blackbird includes rebuilding the rotating unit of the powerhead, checking electronics, computerized boring and honing of blocks. Available services also include repair and replacement of blocks, crankshafts, and lower units as needed.
Overpowering a boat is a dangerous condition and under powering results in poor performance. A motor with less than 75% of the recommended horsepower will result in unsatisfactory performance. All boats built in the U.S. have a Coast Guard Rating Plate specifying the recommended horsepower for the hull.
Shafts lengths are standardized to fit 15-inch, 20-inch and 25-inch transoms. Impaired performance and fuel economy will result when the shaft is too long. When the shaft is not the proper length and is too long it will extend in the water creating drag. If it is too short, it may cause ventilation. If the water intake ports are insufficiently submerged, engine overheating and severe damage can be the result.
Dangers of Ventilation
Ventilation occurs when air is drawn in the spinning propeller blades. The propeller is pushing air instead of water resulting in a reduced load on the engine, at which point little thrust is generated. Causes of ventilation are related to the motor being mounted too high, motor trimmed out too excessively, damage to the propeller or foreign objects lodged in the diffuser ring.
The experts at Blackbird Industries advise that an important factor in achieving optimal performance is the proper motor height on the transom. To alleviate hydrodynamic drag the motor should be mounted as high as possible. The anti-ventilation plate should be about the same height as, or up to two inches higher than, the keel, with the motor in neutral trim.
Blackbird Industries on the Benefits of a Remanufactured Motor
When deciding whether to buy a new motor or to get your existing motor remanufactured, there are two things to consider. First and foremost is the quality of the facility and the equipment used to remanufacture your motor. The second is related costs and potential savings.
The experts at Blackbird Industries adhere to the following process:
-As-new motor: all surfaces are completely machined with ultra-modern equipment, then high pressure washed
- Pistons: all pistons are precisely fitted and plateau diamond honed and all crankshafts are cleaned
- Motors: all motors receive a remanufactured crankshaft. It is important to note that Blackbird Industries is the only outboard rebuilder with the expertise to refinish crankshafts
- Fuel systems: fuels systems are completely cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner, then computer re-calibrated
- Electronics: all electronics are tested and inspected along with the trim system and lower unit
-Re –assembly: the motor is reassembled and painted and tested as a preliminary break-in to ensure that it is ready to go
The industry standard for rebuilt motors is 100 hours and a loss of 20% power, and performance is for approximately 50,000 miles. Today’s modern machines achieve what is termed a ‘plateau finish.’ The machines use diamond precision computer controlled hones. Using this process allows remanufactured engines to go twice the distance, up to 100,000 miles.
Through proper maintenance and care of an outboard motor, it will remain in good working order for many years. When the time comes for a new or remanufactured motor the experts at Blackbird Industries, a company specializing in remanufacturing outboards and powerheads will ensure that you achieve optimal boat performance.
