Black-Tie Style Icon: Humphrey Bogart

See also

It's New Year's Eve and across the country, and many men will be stepping out in their black-tie best for an elegant evening of celebration. Style combined with substance make a real man stride with swag and turn heads as he walks into a room. And when you're talking about tuxedos -- or even just suits -- you've got to give it to Humphrey Bogart.

Despite the fact that he died January 14, 1957, Mr. Bogart is still written and talked about as a style icon. And media -- from GQ to Details -- still write about his style and give hints to modern men on how to replicate his look. Why? Ever see the film noir classic "Casablanca" where Mr. Bogart cuts a classic silhouette in a white tuxedo? How about his dashing black-tie look in "Sabrina" with Audrey Hepburn? Watch any film starring Mr. Bogart, whether he plays good guy or bad guy, and you will see beyond a doubt that this man could work a double-breasted suit! He also popularized the belted trench coat and the cocked fedora, and the unbelted wool overcoat with the collar pulled up around the neck.

"Bogart on film is certainly a style icon," says Will McKinley of Cinematically Insane. "In old movies everybody wears a suits. Style was egalitarian. Even the bums on the breadline wore suits. Style is tragically missing from today’s life. Men go on dates wearing basketball jerseys with backward turned baseball hats," he laments.

Mr. Bogart, a born and bred New Yorker, grew up in an era where style was a part of everyday life. But he also had fashion running through his blood. His mother, Maud Bogart was the artistic director of The Delineator, a woman's fashion magazine and she was also a successful commercial illustrator with cover on Harper's magazine. Bogart grew up on Manhattan's Upper Eastside and attended some of the most prominent private school's in the city.

"I've been around a long time," Mr. Bogart is quoted as saying. "Maybe the people like me." That is an understatement.
