Black Star Beer is the signature double hopped golden lager made by the Great Northern Brewing Company in Whitefish, Montana. Black Star and Great Northern Brewing Company will also be celebrating their 17th anniversary while hosting the Black Star Barter for the second year in a row. And if that isn’t enough, this all happens during the 53rd annual Whitefish Winter Carnival on Saturday, February 4th, 2012.
It is all about the Barter and the grand prize, and they mean GRAND, is a YEAR’s supply of beer. That is 52 cases of the crisp, refreshing, double hopped golden lager – Black Star Beer. To put in another way, that’s one thousand two hundred and forty eight beers!
With all that on the line, they are asking contestants “what would you do or trade for a year’s supply of beer?” Beer lovers will draw from their imagination and skills and showcase their most creative, over‐the‐top, outrageous submissions to barter. According to Black Star staff, barter submissions will range from prized items to elaborate performances, tricked‐out stunts to finely crafted goods, plus ideas never‐before‐seen. All barter offerings will be ranked by a colorful panel of judges based on creativity, awesomeness, thoughtfulness, and enthusiasm. There will only be one winner, so contestants will be competing head to head to make their idea count.
Contestants may register their barter submission at the Great Northern Brewery beginning at 11 a.m. MST until just before the start of the barter at 4:30 p.m. MST.
The Barter begins directly after the Whitefish Winter Carnival parade at about 5 PM. The brewpub invites participants and everyone to stick around after the Barter and help celebrate their 17th Anniversary. There will be live music from the Lil’ Smokies, dancing and a specially brewed anniversary black lager created by head brewer, Joe Barberis.

All about Black Star Beer
Black Star is a Double Hopped Golden Lager first brewed at the Great Northern Brewing Company in Whitefish, Montana in 1995. Black Star was created by Minott Wessinger, a fifth generation brewer and great‐great grandson of West Coast brewing pioneer Henry Weinhard. Hopped first in the kettle and then again before finishing, Black Star is a refreshing beer with lots of taste.
