As the roller derby off-season lumbers on, there is not a lot going on between now and the New Year as far as bouts go, but the Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls do have three roller derby boot camps as well as tryouts for the 2014 season planned for this week.
From 8:30- 10:00 PM this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (October 15, 16 and 17) there will be boot camps held, where coaches and players from Black-n-Bluegrass will show prospective players the types of skills it takes to be a roller derby player.
On Sunday, October 20 those who have been to the boot camps will have the opportunity to try out for the 2014 Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls. Prospective skaters must bring their own equipment (helmet, mouth guard, elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards) and probably a bottle of water, because you will need it. Metrics for tryouts will be based on the minumum skill sets set by the WFTDA.
The boot camp and tryouts will be held at Ollie’s Skate Park located at 8171 Dixie Highway, Florence KY 41042.
Current Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirl Sinobite shares what It was like for her to become a rollergirl.
“A few years back, I was living life day to day with three titles: mom, wife and HR manager. That was it - I had no outlet for me -nothing to relieve stress - anything to get away from the chaos of being a mom, a wife, and working in a high paced, stressful job. Although very blessed, my life was lived for those three titles. Something was missing, and most moms can probably relate. Then I met roller derby. I say met - because it is a relationship. A relationship you will build with yourself, your team, and the sport. You will fight, you will cry, and you will find strength in yourself you never knew you had. Through all the fun, love, pain, stress, drama, bruises, and sweat (lots and lots of sweat) - you will NOT find that you emerge as a new person. No - that person has always been in you. You will have simply awoken her. You may never know if you don't try.”
